Standard Side Control - Top
DominantStandard Side Control
You are chest to chest across your partner, hips low and legs wide. Your first job is to take space away before you take anything else: keep them flat, block the near hip, and stay heavy through your chest rather than your arms. Submissions and the mount are available from here, but only once they can no longer turn toward you.
Control
Maintain your position and neutralize your partner's attempts to escape or advance.
Goals
Basic Side Control Hold
Hold the pin with chest pressure and connection rather than with your arms, and follow your partner whenever they move.
Crossface Awareness
Use the crossface to take away their ability to turn toward you, without letting your own weight drift off their chest.
Keep them flat on their back
Stop your partner getting onto their side. Flat shoulders mean no frames, no shrimp and no escape.
Advance
Techniques to improve your position — sweeps, transitions, and movements that get you to a better place.
